childrens and Science books

About the book:

The origin: Spike, The Amazing Chicken is based on the activities of a real hen named Spike who lives on the author’s cousin’s ranchette out West.

The story: Readers learn about Spike through the conversations between three characters: a TV Host who is interviewing Spike, Spike herself and one of the children who joins them in the interview. Amazing facts about Spike – taking her naps on the back of a goat, trying to talk to a teddy bear, alerting the family to a goat who was having trouble giving birth -  are added to by fictitious events created by the author, such as Spike substituting dog food chunks for cereal because she thinks one of the kids doesn’t like her, and Spike becoming very annoyed when the TV show pauses for a commercial that shows a roast chicken.

Pre-publication Testing: This book was tested in 20 classrooms in three states.  Students marveled at the things Spike did and laughed at the humor in the fictional conversations between the TV Host and Spike. Everyone liked the beautiful color pictures accompanying the story text. Most of the students in the third, fourth and fifth grade classes tested indicated they would buy the book for themselves.
